Child Nutrition Resumes Free Meals for Kids Program

Laveen’s Child Nutrition Department will resume distributing free meals to all children under the age of 18 on September 14.

Breakfast and lunch will be distributed together each day, Monday – Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at all Laveen school sites, except Estrella Foothills.

The meals will be served curbside or walk-up. Children must be present to receive meals. There are no income requirements and no need to register. Children do not need to be enrolled in a Laveen school to receive a meal.

For your safety and convenience, parents or guardians picking up meals on behalf of children in their care will be asked to complete and display a placard provided on your first day of meal service.

The continuation of the free meals for children program was made possible through a waiver by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Laveen Elementary School District’s Child Nutrition Services Department may only serve one meal bundle, per child, per day. Measures are in place to ensure this federal requirement is met and we appreciate the community’s cooperation in adhering to this policy. The unlawful sale or exchange of meals or components of meals is not permitted. Laveen Child Nutrition Services reserves the right to deny service to children and families that do not comply with the federal requirements of the Summer Food Service Program and all applicable waivers.

Laveen Shares Local Health Benchmark Data, Reopening Updates

As we look forward to safely reopening our schools for in-person, on-site instruction, Laveen is following guidance provided by the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) and the Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH).  Both agencies recommend that school districts meet three benchmarks for two consecutive weeks before offering the option of on-site instruction.

On September 3, MCDPH released data that shows Laveen trending towards meeting the public health benchmarks. We will monitor the data for another few weeks to ensure the trend continues.

We are hopeful that we can safely begin the on-site instruction option after Fall Break (October 12).

Immunizations Required for 11-Year-Olds

The Arizona Department of Health Services requires that all 11-year-old children obtain two adolescent vaccines, Tdap and Meningococcal (MCV4), or provide a valid exemption. These new immunizations are important as they will provide protection against serious illness.

Tdap is a combination vaccine that provides protection against three bacterial diseases — Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (Whooping Cough). Meningococcal prevents against four types of bacterial meningitis.

Parents should review their child’s immunization records. If these vaccinations have not been received, the child should obtain the vaccination at either their doctor’s office or an immunization clinic. Proof of immunizations will need to be received before the student can begin school.

Children who are not yet 11 will be required to get the new immunizations once they turn 11.

Child Nutrition Continues Curbside Meal Distribution During Online Learning

The distribution of school meals will be changing once classes start on August 3. Meals will again be served on a free, reduced-price, or paid basis depending on a family’s eligibility status.

Meals will be served curbside daily at each school site (except Estrella Foothills) between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Meals are only available to students who are presently enrolled in a Laveen School District School. Meals may picked up from any location regardless of the school your child is enrolled at. Parents or students must have their child’s Student ID badge or Student ID number in order to pick up meals. These will be scanned/ entered prior to distribution.

Breakfast and lunch will be served at one time. Breakfast is free for all Laveen students. Lunch is served on a free, reduced-price, or paid basis depending on a family’s eligibility status.

Qualifying for Free, Reduced Price Meals

Laveen schools serve free or reduced-price lunches to families that qualify based on income requirements.

Families must reapply annually. If you qualified last year your eligibility expires soon. Use our secure online portal, EZMealApp.com, to complete the 2020-21 application safely and quickly. All families are encouraged to apply. Applications are processed year round and are kept confidential.

Families that meet federal income levels may qualify for free or reduced-price meals. Lunches are currently priced at $2.50; the reduced price is $.40. Breakfast is served free to all students, regardless of eligibility, before school each day.

In addition to receiving a discount on meal prices, completed applications provide additional funds to the district in the form of grant money. Funding for prevention programs, parent training, and interventions for students in reading and math is often based on the number of students qualified for free or reduced–price lunch.

Fee Based Meals

Families who do not qualify for free meals are encouraged to add funds to their child’s meal account using the secure portal EZSchoolPay.
